China
China Mission 1 (29 August through 26 September 1999)

Previous excavations were conducted and remains were recovered in October 1997 and September 1998, with the final mission ending in September 1999. Although the past fiscal year encompasses this recovery operation, it is mentioned in this report because the individuals were all identified in FY 2000 and the identification and subsequent burial of the individuals received significant press coverage.

The incident involved the loss of a B-24 Bomber from the 375th Bomber Squadron, 14th Air Force on 31 August 1944 on a bombing mission out of Liuchow, China. The site is in Xing An County in the province of Guang Xi and is characterized by granite rock, loose top-soil and vertical rock exposure at 2,050 meters.
